Deganwy. Deganwy, or Degannwy in Middle Welsh, is a small town and electoral ward on the Creuddyn Peninsula in Conwy County Borough, Wales . It is a relatively small town most notable for Deganwy Castle, situated 110 m above the town. In the 6th century, it was fortified as the stronghold of Maelgwn Gwynedd, king of Gwynedd . Maelgwn 'Gwynedd' ap Cadwallon 'Maelgwn Hir' - son of Cadwallon ap Einion - High King. Ruled most of North Wales from his base at Deganwy and briefly at Llanrhos & Caer-Segont. King of Gwynedd & all Wales. He was the grandson of Iago ab Idwal, he became a rightful ruler. Again the Gwynedd dynasty was restored to the Royal Court The site of Castell Deganwy (Deganwy Castle) sits behind the town, and has a turbulent history dating to at least the 6th century when it was the seat of King Maelgwn Gwynedd.In the centuries since, a string of powers occupied, fortified and then demolished Castell Deganwy. Henry III rebuilt the castle for the last time between 1245 and 1250 before its final destruction in 1263. 6th Century - Deganwy became the Llys (fortified court) of the fearsome Maelgwn, Lord of Anglesey, who died in 547 AD (Nennius). 822 - The Annals Cambriae state that the fortress of Deganwy, described as Arx Decantorum, was destroyed by the invading Saxon army of Ceolwulf of Mercia. The Saxon army did not stay. Medieval Period Sitting just behind the town is the site of Castell Deganwy, once the seat of King Maelgwn Gwynedd. This much visited attraction (rebuilt by Henry III in 1245) dates back to the 6 th century and plays an important role in the history of Wales. Sitting on the wetlands of the Conwy Estuary is the RSPB Conwy Nature Reserve.
