Polesden Lacey was built in 1821-3 by Thomas Cubitt; it was remodelled in 1902-6 by Sir Ambrose Poynter, and again by Mewes & Davis (architects of the Ritz Hotel in London) for Mrs Ronald Greville, who bought the house in 1906. This Regency house was expanded from an earlier building, and extensively remodelled in 1906 by Margaret Greville, a well-known Edwardian hostess. The Saloon at Polesden Lacey, nr Dorking, Surrey. The Saloon is extravagently carved and panelled, the panelling is c1700 and was removed from an Italian palazzo. Red brocade is let into the panelling (this brocade was replaced in 1960) and the large portrait is of Margaret Anderson, the Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville, DBE, and is by Herman Schmiechen.
