In 1975, a group of young teachers - Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and Jack Kornfield - decided to start a meditation retreat center. Having traveled and taught around the country the previous year, they recognized the value and support that a dedicated facility would provide. So the search began for a suitable environment. The Barre Center (BCBS) is located on 90 acres of forest in central Massachusetts, just a stone's throw from the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) retreat center. It was founded in 1989 as a complement to IMS and operates as a separate organization.
