Tryfan's South Ridge Approaching Tryfan's summit along the South Ridge from Bwlch Tryfan is a little less demanding than the northern route. It still involves some scrambling, though, particularly on the final step to the summit. There are several ways to reach Bwlch Tryfan for Far South Peak and the start of the ridge proper from the north. Step 1. From the lay-by on the A5 (SH663602) a path starts from a kissing gate, leads alongside a wall, then turns left and begins to climb below Milestone Buttress on Tryfan's north-west corner and up onto the heathery lower shoulder of the ridge. The going is rocky and gives an opportunity to get those scrambling limbs warmed up. Tryfan, despite not being the highest mountain in Wales, often holds the title of being the most iconic. It tops out at only a measly 917 metres in height, making it the shortest of the 14 Peaks, barely even making the grade. To add insult to injury, surveyors recently tried to prove it was even shorter and kick it out of the 14 peaks club, but Tryfan is a stunning mountain in the Glyderau mountain range in Eryri National Park (Snowdon). The name is derived from 'Tri Faen', meaning three rocks, referring to the three rocky peaks that can be seen from some angles. This trail takes you up to its peak via the West Face. This is a grade 1/2 scramble, for which considerable expertise is essential to avoid any mishaps.
