Lorene Cary is the author of the memoir Black Ice, three novels, a book for young readers, and a play, My General Tubman. Her one-act opera and memoir, Ladysitting, explores the author's relationship and time spent with her grandmother Nana, a fierce and independent woman who managed a business until she was 100, and the stories of five Black Ice (1992) In 1972 Lorene Cary, a bright, ambitious black teenager from Philadelphia, was transplanted into the formerly all-white, all-male environs of the elite St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, where she became a scholarship student in a "boot camp" for future American leaders.
