Our History. The Town of Sodus was formed in January 1789, by Court of General Sessions of Ontario County. The name of the town was derived from the Native American word "Assorodus", meaning silvery water. It is the central town on the northern border of the county, with Lake Ontario on the north. In 1794, under the direction of Charles Sodus Point is a village in Wayne County, New York that has less than 1,000 residents, though that shouldn't deter any visitors from checking out this charming spot. The low-key village makes for the perfect weekend getaway. The name "Sodus" is said to be derived from a native term that means "gleam on the water.". The present village of Sodus was first used as a location for a town meeting in 1815 and has remained the center of the town since that time. The town of Sodus is one of only two towns in Wayne County to ever experience a military battle within its borders.
