05b James Cook (1772-75) In July 1772 Cook, now a commander, set out with HMS Resolution and Adventure with instructions from the Admiralty for "prosecuting [his] discoveries as near to the South Pole as possible.". First, though, he was to look for Cape Circumcision, mapped by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bouvet de Lozier in 1739 and James Cook was a naval captain, navigator and explorer who, in 1770, charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on his ship HMB Endeavour. He later disproved the existence of Captain James Cook landing in Botany Bay, New South Wales, 1770 Captain Cook's First Voyage 1768-1771.
