Coenobita rugosus is a species of land hermit crab native to Indonesia, Australia and the east African coast to the south west Pacific. C. rugosus has four walking legs, a small pincer, a large pincer, and antennae. When threatened C. rugosus is able to make a 'chirping' sound by rubbing its large pincer against its shell as a stridulatory apparatus. C. rugosus vary in colour depending on Coenobita clypeatus is a generalist scavenger/decomposer. In their natural habitat, their diet comprises of decaying animal and plant matter, fungi, fruits, berries, seeds, feces, etc. For example, according to the study, their diet on Mona Island consists mostly of the feces of the Mona Island ground iguana (Cyclura stejnegeri). C. rugosus can look a lot like an Ecuadorian (Coenobita compressus) at first glance. The eyes are elongated, there can be striping on the sides of the body, and when C. rugosus' shell is too small, like the crab in the middle picture, it will adopt the Ecuadorian habit of crossing two legs over the large claw.
