Robert Nathaniel Dett was an incredible trail-blazer and talented artist who brought together European traditions and his Black roots. Dett was an extremely hardworking personality, always driven to improve his craft by further study. He was the first African-American to graduate from Oberlin College, one of the few unsegregated colleges at the time, with a double degree in piano and composition in 1908. Even after being awarded honorary doctorates in music from Howard Robert Nathaniel Dett was born in Drummondsville, Ontario, Canada, on 11 October 1882. Part of a musical family, Dett was encouraged to study piano along with his two older brothers. After he and his family moved to Niagara Falls, New York, he continued his musical studies at the Oliver Willis Halstead Conservatory. In 1908, Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory with a double major in Piano Performance and Composition. The first Black student to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory with a double major, he went on to become an influential teacher, composer, and performer throughout his life.
