Fort Monroe National Monument is open year-round for outdoor activities like walking and exploring the grounds from 5 am to Midnight. Many of the buildings are currently occupied by private residents, please respect the resident's privacy by not peering into windows or opening gates. Fort Monroe continues to expand public programming through Hampton's national monument, Fort Monroe, plays a large part in Hampton's history. In 1607, the English explorer Captain John Smith came ashore near Fort Monroe. In 1609, colonial settlers built a wooden structure large enough to hold 50 men and seven mounted cannons, and called it Fort Algernourne. In 1619, it would serve as a landing place in the New World for Africans brought in as slaves FORT MONROE WAKLKING TOUR: STOP #10. The Old Point Comfort Lighthouse was built in 1802 and continues to work today. It is the oldest structure at Fort Monroe, predating the fort by twenty years. It is also the oldest operating lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay area. The light keeper's quarters is the brown house to the right. President Andrew Jackson frequently visited Fort Monroe and Fort Calhoun, later renamed Fort Wool, during the summers of his presidency, in 1829, 1831, 1833, and 1834. Both forts were under construction at the time. Broken-hearted after the death of his wife, President Jackson spent a lot of time at Fort Calhoun. Construction began in 1819 and continued for 15 years. Second Lt. Robert E. Lee served as an engineer at Fort Monroe from 1831 to 1834.
