We've always wanted to visit the Big Four Ice Caves in Washington, so after finding out that this was a dog friendly trail and only a two hour drive from Seattle…we finally decided to make our way to the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and visit this natural wonder! Now we are usually apprehensive about hiking popular trails like this one that sees about 50,000 visitors per year History of Big Four Ice Caves . Big Four Mountain is 21 miles east of the Granite Falls. It has a height of 6180 ft, and debris from the avalanches pile up at the bottom of its steep. It remains there throughout the year due to the shade of the mountain. During summer, the snowmelt streams flow beneath the debris pile, forming the caves in the ice. The Big Four Ice Caves are a series of ice caves at the base of Big Four Mountain. The hike out to the cave is on an easy, well-maintained trail. The trailhead is at the former site of a three-story, fifty-room hotel that was built in 1920 and burned down in 1949. Only the hearth and chimney survived, both of which still stand in the present picnic area.
