With roots beginning in 1912, Independent Stave Company has over a century of history and institutional knowledge to pour into making barrels. Our in-house engineering division is fully focused on process and product innovation. They design and build each facility using cutting-edge computer-controlled technology and modern automation systems. Coopering is one of many woodcrafts featured at Sauder Village. A cooper was the person who made the wooden barrels, buckets and other vessels needed to carry and store liquids. In our Cooper Shop, we preserve this ancient craft. Visitors can watch and learn from our talented coopers as they demonstrate their trade using tools and methods that Phil Burton, president and owner of Barrel Builders, has been in the barrel making business for over 40 years. Barrel Builders is a family-owned and operated cooperage located in California's Napa Valley, originally started by three employees from the Robert Mondavi Winery. Mondavi was one of the first winemakers to bring in French oak cooperage. At Tonnellerie Baron, each stage of production, from splitting the oak to the finishing of the barrel, is integrated into our workshops.
