Buying the Melos is my attempt to simplify my system a bit. I currently have a restored Knight tube preamp driving a Hafler DH-200 for midbass, mids and highs, plus an NAD 1240 driving the subwoofer. The lows are a bit flabby on the Knight, but not bad for midbass, but the sub end of the signal just goes to mush, hence the NAD. 1. Surprisingly, I actually have to turn the volume control on my Maestro up quite a bit from where it was on my Gold to get the same level of volume in my Sony R10's. This was confirmed with my handy Ratshack SPL meter. 2. God, I thought the Melos Gold was creamy and buttery. OH MY GOD--- the Maestro is UBER-CREAMY. As befits the high quality of the Grado headphones, Melos has paid careful attention to the parts selected for the SHA-1. The audio signal is routed with both Grado's own proprietary cable as well as FMS "zero-core" hookup wire, all resistors are low-noise metal-film types, and the few caps in the audio circuit are all high-quality polypropylenes. Concerning the Melos SHA-1, I sent Will a four-paragraph explanation of our findings a few weeks ago. I praised the unit, called for its ressurection in a smaller form as a dedicated headphone preamp, and basically begged not to let the circuit design fade into oblivion or at least share any information with others if Melos Audio Restoration didn't want to take on the project.
