On 11 November 1894 Jandamarra and his posse killed five white men driving cattle with guns and ammunition was captured. This was the first time guns were used against European settlers in an organised attack. Two weeks after the death of Richardson in late 1894 the police faced Jandamarra and his men at Windjana Gorge. It was an Aboriginal man from the Pilbara, a long way south, who finally gunned down Jandamarra in the hidden depths of Tunnel Creek in April 1897. Today, Jandamarra is remembered as a freedom fighter and a champion for his people. Sometimes he is referred to as the "black Ned Kelly", an outlaw who struggled against authority. Windjana Gorge is a highly spiritual place to Bunuba Aboriginal people and the Wandjina are the powerful creation spirits that reside in the area. Hence the name Windjana, which was (mis)recorded by William Forrester, who took up a nearby pastoral lease in 1884 and built Lillimilura Homestead.
