On this day in 1636, William Pynchon received the deed giving him title to most of what is now Springfield, Longmeadow, and Agawam. In exchange, he paid the local Agawam Indians 18 fathoms of wampum, 18 coats, and a quantity of hoes, hatchets, and knives. A devout Puritan, Pynchon left England for Massachusetts Bay in 1630. Agawam Massachusetts, 1890 "Agawam is a very beautiful town having two postal villages, — Agawam (centre) and Feeding Hills. In 1885, it had a population of 2,357, and a territorial area of 13,775 acres, of which 2,884 are woodland. There are 280 farms, 482 dwelling-houses, and a total of 1,346 buildings. Agawam Sampler When designing the Agawam Sampler, I included many hallmarks of the antique samplers found in museums. But most importantly, I wanted this sampler to be a record of early Agawam history. The church, so central to every New England town, takes a place of prominence. Pictured here is the early Congregational Church, built in the 1800s. The roots of the Agawam Historical Association begin with "Charles W. Hull. Jr., who, in addition to farming, carried on a lumber business and held various town offices including Selectman and Assessor, and as a hobby collected a variety of things; history, antiques, minerals and Indian relics. He was a familiar figure seen walking slowly along Agawam Veteran's Council Battleship Cove.
