Muriel Kauffman was born in Toronto, Canada Aug. 28, 1917 to Fred George McBrien (1888-1938) and Irene Zella Jarrott McBrien (1888-1983). Her father was a lawyer and politician. He served as an Alderman for the Sixth Ward in the City of Toronto in 1911, began studying law in 1914, and graduated from Osgoode Hall with his law degree in 1922.
