This show, which focuses on the work Varo made in Mexico City during the last eight years of her life, between 1955 and 1963, emphasises her genius for invention. She used various compositional strategies to reveal the passage of time and movement through space. F or decades, work by the Spanish-born painter Remedios Varo, largely unknown outside Mexico, her adopted home, was a cultish pleasure. A recent exhibition at the Gallery Wendi Now, 23 years after Varo's work last starred in a major museum show in the United States, "Remedios Varo: Science Fictions," recently opened at the Art Institute of Chicago, bringing Creation of the Birds, 1957, by Remedios Varo, is one of more than 60 works featured in a new Chicago exhibition about the Surrealist.
