Wellsburg, West Virginia 1900 EARLY HISTORY OF WELLSBURG 10/4/32 Inspired by the fireside stories of the great county to the West, Three adventurers set out from Brownsville, Pa., on a crisp September morning, in 1772-Johnathan, Israel and Friend Cox. They were eager to reach the BIG RIVER (Ohio). When the bridge from Wellsburg to Brilliant was first planned, Calvin Coolidge was president, Amelia Earhart was about to cross the Atlantic and someone discovered a machine that could slice bread! The bridge was about to be built 95 years ago. "It goes back to 1928," said W.Va. Senator Ryan Weld, R-District 1. Wellsburg is the county seat of Brooke County. It is situated in the Northern Panhandle on the Ohio River. The town is 16 miles north of Wheeling and 40 miles west of Pittsburgh, at an elevation of 661 feet. It is served by state routes 2, 27, and 67. Wellsburg has one primary school and one middle school, with the county's consolidated high Brooke County's seat of justice predates the county's formation by several years. First chartered as Charles Town, and just as often referred to as Buffalo in its early days, the settlement was officially named Wellsburg in 1816 to avoid confusion with Charles Town in Jefferson County and Charleston in Kanawha County.
