His father joined the faculty of South Carolina College in 1835, and the family moved to Columbia. In 1839 Lieber traveled to Germany, where he stayed with relatives in Hamburg and A native of Prussia, Lieber migrated to America in 1827 and was elected chair of history and political economy at South Carolina College in 1835.
