It is approximately 460 kilometers southwest of Sydney and 250 kilometers northwest of Melbourne. The town has a population of around 3,900 and is known for its rich history in agriculture and aviation. The name "Narrandera" is said to be derived from the Wiradjuri word "Narrungdera" which means "place of lizard or goanna". The first white man to pass through the district was the famous explorer, Captain Charles Sturt.
