Raf chilmark地下シリーズ

The majority of RAF Chilmark is below ground and is made up of 13 acres of tunnels and vaults; these are the remnants of the quarries worked in Chilmark for hundreds of years. It was initially used to house explosives and bombs. It was the home of No. 11. Maintenance Unit and in the end of the 1930s a railway was built to link the quarries Chilmark was the site of a major underground ammunition store since before World War II, built in a bathstone quarry site. By 1941 it seems to have evolved into an RAF bomb store. Rather than convert this existing protected site, a new surface bunker was built to house a Regional Government Headquarters (RGHQ). The depots were in danger of obsolescence for two main reasons. During the war, RAF bombs became much larger: 4,000 lb (1,800 kg) quickly became the new large bomb and the vast production of the older 250 lb (110 kg) and 500 lb (230 kg) devices was assigned to long-term storage. This meant the depots had little space to store new, bigger bombs RGHQ Chilmark was designed as a two-level bunker, approximately 200 feet in length and forty feet wide. The bunker was located on gently sloping ground overlooking the Nadder Valley near the village of Chilmark, it is located on MoD land next to the rail interchange sidings of the vast RAF Chilmark underground bomb store. This gate lies on the line of the disused double track narrow gauge railway of the former ammunition and bomb depot of RAF Chilmark, part of which can be seen beyond the gate. A picture taken in the opposite direction, 905852, but in the same position, shows the rails more clearly.
