1 'Gorkha' refers to a hill principality west of Kathmandu where the kings of the Gorkha kingdom conquered and annexed neighbouring states to form the modern nation of Nepal during the eighteenth century. It is important to note that the term 'Gorkha' (or its Anglicized version 'Gurkha') is mainly used by outsiders to refer to Nepali men who enlist in British regiments. Since 1911 however, of the 16 VCs awarded to men serving with Gurkha regiments, 13 have been bestowed on native Gurkhas. [3] The most recent award was made in 1965 to Rambahadur Limbu, during the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation. [3] Along with the Royal Green Jackets, the Gurkha regiments are among the most heavily decorated Commonwealth Limbu spent the rest of his life in Damak, East Nepal. He built roads, a school and a temple, and advocated for Gurkha pensions, compensation and medical care. On April 22, 2023, Limbu passed away at the age of 83. He is survived by his two sons, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Limbu also left behind a trust to help social causes in Gurkha infantry marches through the streets of Japan after the war.
