It was here that Mr Ignazio Florio, by the end of the 19th century, created the revolutionary method of preservation of tuna, and built his famous plant. La Tonnara di Favignana (il cui nome completo è Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di Favignana e Formica) è uno dei siti di archeologia industriale più importanti di tutta la Sicilia. La pesca del tonno rosso a Favignana e nelle Isole Egadi ha radici antichissime ma, per avere il primo stabilimento per la lavorazione del tonno, bisogna aspettare il 1860.
