Denver's first Consul General of Mexico Casimiro Barela. Barela helped write the Colorado state constitution. He also served in the Territorial legislature and was one of Colorado's longest Casimiro was named after one of his anscestors, Casimiro Varelas, who brought a colony of eighty people from Spain to Mexico. Later, in 1777, Varelas joined Lieutenant Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza's second expedition to California, where he participated in the Spanish settling of the tip of the peninsula now known as San Francisco. "First published in Spanish in 1911, this little-known biography of Casimiro Barela (1847-1920) is a rare account of an accomplished politician's career whose life was shaped by issues of race and class. Barela was a member of Colorado's Constitutional Convention in 1875 and represented Las Animas County in the state senate for forty years.
