Town Hall Seattle and Third Place Books present Boldt at 50, a panel discussion centered on the late Charles Wilkinson's Treaty Justice: The Northwest Tribes, the Boldt Decision, and the Recognition of Fishing Rights to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boldt Decision, a pivotal moment in civil rights history and tribal sovereignty. The decision handed down by U.S. District Court Judge George Boldt 50 years ago next month was the result of sacrifices made by Native fishers and their families jailed and beaten while defending The "Boldt Decision," U.S. v. Washington (1974), was the US District Court case, substantially upheld on appeal, that affirmed off-reservation treaty fishing rights and tribal management authority over traditional fishing areas. In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day (October 9, 2023) and the upcoming 50th anniversary of the 1974 Boldt Decision [1], we are shining a light on the historic impact that landmark court decision had in righting the wrongs of history.This decision reiterated what was promised to the Indigenous peoples in (what is now) Washington state in the 1855 Treaties Washington on Feb. 12, 1974. Fifty years on, it has done that and much more. Rare is the legal ruling so transformative to a state, a region, and its inhabitants.
