Zhongyue Temple. The Zhongyue Temple, listed by the State Council as a key national temple of Taoism, is located on Songshan Mountain in Dengfeng county, Henan province. Songshan Mountain is a Erqi Square. Visiting Erqi Square is definitely one of the top things to do in Zhengzhou. It is in the city center and Erqi Memorial Tower in the center of the square is the landmark of the city. It has 14 layers and a height of 63 meters (206 feet). On the top of the building is a bell knocking every hour on the hour. Location: Zhongyue Temple is located at the foot of Taishi Mountain which is at the southern foot of Songshan Mountain. It is 4 kilometers east of the central city of Dengfeng. Major Sites in the Zhongyue Temple Complex Taishi Towers. About 300 meters in front of Zhongyue Temple are the Taishi Towers that are the symbolic gate of Zhongyue Temple. The Zhongyue Taoist temple is a UNESCO world heritage site and is not so commonly visited by tourists. Compared to the White Horse Temple it gets a lot less traffic and is in some ways more spectacular. You can feel the history in the expansive grounds. When we were there we found monks chanting in the furthest hall. To visit Zhongyue Temple, you need to go to Dengfeng City, which is located between Luoyang (80km) and Zhengzhou (70km). Travel overland to Dengfeng is the only way either from Luoyang and Zhengzhou. Numerous buses shuttle to Dengfeng from Luoyang and Zhengzhou. It is also quite easy to hitchhike along National Highway 207 from Luoyang to The Zhongyue Temple bore witness to the convergence of various thoughts in China, with Confucian thoughts as the core. It has crystallized the essence of the Chinese culture that is open-minded and inclusive. Notes. 1.
