Born in Davenport, Iowa, Heeschen earned his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in northern Africa and Europe during World War II. Carl Heeschen, with other community members, helped to establish the Meadville Council on the Arts in 1975.
