He showed an early interest in chess and began playing competitively in the 1920s. In 1933, he won the Soviet Chess Championship, which marked the beginning of a long and successful career. Botvinnik went on to win the Soviet Chess Championship a total of six times, and Fischer played Botvinnik in a match when he was 19 years old. He played the Great Botvinnik, who was a many-times champion of the world. Fischer achieved an objectively winning game with the black pieces before adjournment on move 44.
