The Huascarán Biosphere Reserve is located in the department of Ancash north of Lima in the central-west region of Peru. Its altitude ranges from 1,020 m to 6,768 m (Mount Huascarán) with 11 different types of habitats from tropical desert scrub to Andean tundra. The Cordillera Blanca, an Andean mountain range located in the biosphere reserve Mount Huascarán, mountain peak of the Andes of west-central Peru. The snowcapped peak rises to 22,205 feet (6,768 meters) above sea level in the Cordillera Blanca, east of the Peruvian town of Yungay. It is the highest mountain in Peru and is a favorite of mountaineers and tourists. In 1962 a thaw caused a portion of the sheer north summit to Huaraz, at 3091 m.a.s.l., used to be a beautiful little town until the terrible earthquake of 1970. Though the village has been reconstructed, it is not quite as beautiful as it used to be. The National Park of Huascaran is close to Huaraz. Founded in 1975 the Park is a nature preserve for the amazing flora and fauna of the region. Huascarán protects the great Cordillera Blanca, the largest tropical mountain range in the world. The National Park has 532 glaciers and 410 lagoons, which makes it an excellent water reservoir to sustain life in the region. Whoever visits the Huascaran National Park in Peru will be impressed by the beauty of its landscape. Huascarán National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Huascarán) is a Peruvian national park that comprises most of the mountain range known as Cordillera Blanca (the world's highest tropical mountain range) which is part of the central Andes, in the region of Ancash.
