The Nili-Ravi buffalo has its roots in India Pakistan, and the breed is known and popular for its strong and productive characteristics. It originated in the Punjab region, which spans both India and Pakistan. The history of these buffaloes dates back to the early 20th century. The name " Nili-Ravi " comes from the two rivers, the Nilab and Nili Ravi buffaloes are native to the Ferozepur, Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts of Punjab. A systematic survey was conducted in this area to study the socio-economic status of the farmers, and the demographic distribution and breed characteristics of Nili Ravi buffaloes. The majority of the farmers surveyed (84%) kept buffaloes. The peculiarity of the Nili Ravi buffalo breeds is the walleyes. Head is small, elongated, bulging at top and depressed between eyes. Horns are very small and tightly coiled. Nili Ravi buffalo breeds Bullocks are good for heavy trotting work. The milk yield is 1500-1850 kgs per lactation. The inter calving period is 500 to 550 days. The data on first lactation and lifetime performance records of 501 Nili-Ravi were collected for a period from 1983 to 2017 (35 years) maintained at ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes, Sub-Campus, Nabha, Punjab. The data were analyzed to calculate heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlation for first lactation traits, viz., Age at First Calving (AFC), First Lactation Total Nili Ravi buffalo has a wedge-shaped body with a massive frame. It has a black or brown coat with white patches on some parts. It has small and curly horns that point backward. It has a large and strong udder with well-developed teats.
