When Europeans began to arrive in the New World, the Maliseet tribe were living in walled villages and growing crops such as corn, beans, squash, and tobacco. The people of the tribe had defined roles. The women tended to process the food, and the men would usually do the hunting. When the French began to build a fur trading industry in the Wolastoqiyik (also Welastekwewiyik or Welustuk; pronounced wool-las-two-wi-ig), meaning "people of the beautiful river" in their language, have long resided along the Saint John River in New Brunswick and Maine, and the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. Historically, the Europeans referred to the Wolastoqiyik by a Mi'kmaq word, Maliseet (or A smaller band of the larger Maliseet Nation of New Bunswick, Canada, the Houlton Band calls the Meduxnekeag River home. The Maliseets are river people who have traditionally been hunters and gatherers in the St. John River basin, of which the Meduxnekeag is a tributary.
