Portopalo di Capo Passero is a comune in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily . The southernmost commune of the island of Sicily, it is about 220 kilometres southeast of Palermo and about 45 kilometres southwest of Syracuse. As of February 2017, it had a population of 3,916 and an area of 14.9 square kilometres . The nearest city is Pachino with a population of nearly 10,000. The lighthouse, built in 1884, consists of a stone octagonal tower, 36 metres (118 ft) high with balcony and lantern, atop a larger octagonal base rising from a 1-storey keeper's house.
